Starting shot corn drills

Starting shot corn drills

The ground temperature is only just right at first. We hope that temperatures will continue to rise over the next few days to avoid exposing the corn to cold stress during germination. Nevertheless, we take the risk due to the existing soil moisture. A soil that is too wet can lead to compaction and poor rooting. Ideally, the soil should be moist enough to support optimal germination and root development, but not too wet to avoid drainage problems.

Last minute base tillage for grain corn and soybeans

Last minute base tillage for grain corn and soybeans

The renewed onset of winter with temperatures as low as -8 degrees at night give us the last chance to avoid having to work the area that was uncultivated before winter in the spring. On our heavy soils, a basic spring tillage is devastating to soil structure.

Although very early in the year, we decided to start sowing corn across Europe

We are absolutely aware of the risks and possible yield losses of sowing corn too early. On the other hand, dry sowing condition makes us more and more worried.

Our winter rapeseed Romania

Our winter rapeseed Romania

Our winter oilseed rape is presenting itself satisfactorily. We decided at short notice to sow at the end of September in view of the rains announced for the first week of October.

Actually, this appointment is too late. Drilled were 55 plants/m2 of the varieties Shrek from Rapool, Expression and Extime from Monsanto and Invigor 1165 from BASF.

As a row spacing we have chosen 12.5 cm.

Sugar beet 2019

Sugar beet 2019

Attached are our sugar beets this year from May 29 and June 26. In hindsight, we found that the seeding rate of 125,000 plants/ha was too dense. A first-time infestation of a Cercospora race that is highly resistant to strobiluine proved particularly problematic. New foliage emergence occurred twice and late weeding was severe in some areas.

Grain corn in Romania

Grain corn in Romania

We are very pleased with this year’s grain ducks, with yields peaking at 16.4 t/ha. On the one hand, it is important to emerge quickly after sowing.

Secondly, the corn must pass through the juvenile stage absolutely weed-free with only one herbicide measure. At this point, 50% of the revenue is made. The attached pictures are from June 1 and 26 and October 21.
